The biblical Parable of the Talents as told in Matthew 25: 14-30 speaks about how some slaves were given money by their master – two of them grew it and one buried it in the ground in fear.  We can use the gifts that we have been given to grow more.  The parable recognises that some people have more capacity to grow gifts more than others.  It also speaks of how the status quo – doing nothing – is destructive and not an option for Christians.

People are already generous with giving but we need significantly more money each week to pay the bills. Despite increased fundraising activities, we still need to discover much deeper generosity in response to the boundless generosity of God in Christ.  We encourage regular worshippers at the Cathedral to make a regular commitment to generous giving. In addition this year we launched our very own enacted version of the parable of the talents.  Our ‘Ton of Talents’ began during Lent and it will be completed on All Saints Day (1 November).

One hundred people to each received a gift of £10 from the cathedral – from the front row of the choir to the person who comes in as a newcomer to those who have worshipped here for 40+ years.  Those people are using their £10 gifts to grow some more money for the Cathedral. We gave out one hundred £10 notes totalling a gift of £1000. The challenge is to grow that £1000 into £10,000 by November.

Several members of the Cathedral Community have already been raising money. Recent successes have included:

  • Bill Lee made over £90 (including Gift Aid) from a little auction which took place on Sunday 11 September.
  • Michael Philips won the prize crossword in Country Life and escorted two trips toLeicestershireChurches as well as selling some surplus books. All this has raised £100 including Gift Aid.

Many others are still offering services or planning to put on events. Some of these include:

  • Rong Xiang will be offering jewellery for sale on Sunday 25 September after the morning service.
  • Kathy McIntosh is offering her baking services! Fruit Cakes, Chocolate Cakes or Lemon Drizzle Cakes can be ordered from Kathy at the Cathedral, with any donations received going towards the Talents fund.
  • John Florance – more talk!
John is going to do some more talks for us in the Kempe Room of St Martins House with tickets soon being made available. £5/talk or all three talks for £12.

19 January Why bother with opera?
